Wednesday

Look of the website:

I chose to create a minimalist look and keep it clean. I was pleased with the overall look of the website with the similar colour. I've added elements which I have worked on throughout the project and it feels as though it has come altogether.

Back in the day...

I thought a nice way to allow people to see the sort of event I was talking about was to create images which would reflect the atomsphere that people would come along could experience.
>> I used various elements such as a background, people with the appropriate costume, and other effects such as lighting etc.

I could use these on the website as way of letting people see the overall experience they would or could be incorporated into.

Type Time

>> I used the site Da Font in order to find a type which I though could reflect the overall tone of the Event. Not as loose as a hand writing script but had control and looked elegant was something which I wanted to find.

Below is the type which I decided to use. Lobster created a nice aura from which the pictures and logo's could relate to.

Below you can see how the type has been used in the banner. It gives it a really cheeky feel which the CanCan* is all about! Using similar colours and adding a shadow behind the prominent words added emphasis to the right element.

>>Twitting Chance
Having never used Twitter before I found it complicated to use and wasnt sure as to how to promote the actual event... thank god for Google. My actual twitter page is shown below. I decided not to change the background as I think this is what defines Twitter! Instead I used My GIF inorder to make a relation between the blog, the website and Facebook.

With the help of Tweet my Event, I created the event which would then be transferred to my actual Twitter page... Now people can follow me and keep up to date with new events which may be created in advance.

>> Advertisements can easily take up big chunks of space in the layout of a website. Whether it has one large banner ad or several smaller ones bunched together, the layout will be affected. Some websites will spread out various advertisements throughout the website, others will confine them to a specific area and leave the rest of the website ad-free.

"The strategy here depends of several factors, but websites in particular industries and niches tend to take similar approaches. For example, major news websites typically have advertisements spread throughout the website’s layout. They may not include several ads in any one specific area, but they do have many spots that contain few ads."

"In contrast to news websites, many blogs keep banner ads contained within a designated area of the layout, typically the sidebar, and the rest of the blog may contain no ads. With this approach, the designer needs to account for advertisements in one large area of the layout, but the rest of the website will have little or no need to accommodate ads."

>>Facebook Friends

I use Facebook daily and have many friends which I Keep in contact with, this gave me a perfect chance to create an event which my friends could as though they we real people who would have genuine interest.

I knew that people wouldn't join if they knew it was a real event as it's not something which many people would buy in to, so before hand I sent round an email informing them that this was a 'fake' event. This way people knew that it was a bit of fun and didjnt matter how they reacted etc.

So far several people have joined!! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!

ICONOGRAPHY...
>> These were some of the more trendier logos which I found on smashingmagazine.com, this was a really good website in order to find what you wanted according to what style you were aiming for. Although I liked icons such as these, I wanted a more personal approach and decided to find a hand-drawn memorabilia. variation which would link to the idea of vintage

>> These are the icons in which I have decided to use in order for other people to access the other varients of my promoted event. I have deliberately changed the colour so that the whole ambience of the blog to remain the same. People nowadays are so familiar with Facebook and Twitter that the actual design of the logo should be more familiar than the colour.

Week 9 -

Useful worksheet for the lesson = http://puregene.co.uk/ID/week9.html

In the lesson we were able to create a banner for the top of the website, or blog as well as a little animated GIF and a badge to promote the date of the event.

> I really enjoyed this task as it anabled me to adapt a style to the the project in which i could follow through to various media streams.

>> The Badge - In general I'm drawn to vintage looking textures so I thought this was a great opportunity to incorporate this to my design.
From google I chose appropriate looking images and textures which could form the background to the badge and change the contrast and hue in Photoshop to adapt to the colour scheme that I had previously chosen.

"This was my first attempt at the badge. I really liked the subtlety of the background and the way in which the event part was still readable even though the text was purposely cropped off the badge. I think colour wise I would have liked it more purple, but that can be easily altered. I'm really pleased with how it look and I think I carry the theme of vintage style through my blog will really tie together. I think that I will keep these to my blog as I'd like to try and keep the Website more minimalistic, so the user experience is reached to more people rather than intellectually minded".

"This was my second ch
oice of badge, I took inspiration of Strictly Come Dancing' the way they look very jewelled and trendy. Although some adjustments will have to be made I think I prefer this one as I have chosen a font which resembles class and luxury. I have decided to use this font throughout as this will add an element of consistency to the whole aspect of the website."

>> Banner - The banner gave me the perfect opportunity to make a point as to what my event is called. I used the similar colours and fohnt to show that both were related. Below is the final one which I will use for my blog.

>> Animated GIF - This will be used to create a link from the blog to my website, giving everybody that little bit of dynamic through the experience of blog to website. I used Photoshop to use the Animation tool and faded the type in and out as well as the CANCAN* dancert behind to create a notion of movement.

>> The actual animated GIF can be seen at the top of the blog in all its glory...

Venetian Fever...

>> For the actually event, I've come to a conclusion that in these economic times, It's a lot to ask people to go out and buy costumes for this five minutes of fame scenario. I think this will put people of coming if they know that the requirements mean they have to fork out some of their hard earned money.

>> I've decided that there will be supply of Venetian masks which will give a luxurious feel to the event. Knowing how Covent Garden looks at night, I'm excited to see how everything will look with the lights which will highlight elements of the mask. If people stick to the dress code then hopefully the event will work out in my favour...

Location Location Location -

Since last week, I've been trying to make the event more realistic. I think the choice of venue will be the clincher as it has tro be somewhere related to the event.
>> In the beginning stages I was thinking about Trafalgar Sq. but this would be too mainstream and although you would have the backdrop of the National Gallery behind, there's not enough essence and style to adapt a CanCan theme.
>> Camden was another thought but at the same time I'm not sure whether this is specifically aimed more at the Punk Rock sort of theme, which is not what I'm trying to highlight. Still touristy so there's still a chance that on-lookers will want to come and join in once they see the abundance of people.
>> One of the later ideas was Covent Garden. Again extremely touristy and there are many performers already, this is the essence of Covent Garden. PERFORMANCE AND EXTRAVAGANCE. Especially at night I think the event will work extremely well. The lighting at Covent Garden at night is lovely so it should pick up on the attire being worn (still to be decided) pictures follow of what the venue would look like at night...

_________Although when faced with feedback, Covent Garden wasn't the greatest of ideas, I still think that the aroma of the atomosphere will linger and encourage the publi to join in hopefully as well as the followers of the actual event. The image below shows the lengths people will go to get seen by the public. Costumes are a must to draw attention so I think this will work well.

Feedback...

Yay or Nayyy?

>> Good blog/cyber sketchbook, informative.

>> Is the CanCan a workable idea? Is it realistic? More extravagent, maybe thinking about the look of the evennt rather than the actual cost and economic structure etc.

>> Will people able to afford the costume? Only some, but doesn't have to be the exact french attire, maybe just the skirt? Or just the hair band etc.

>> Think about the economic times? Fair enough everyone might not be able to afford to splash out on the costumes etc, but that's where I think the location will play a big part in how extravegant the participants will be.

>> Money is tight, just one item of fancy dress to make it more accessible for everyone.

>> Location will be key... Covent Garden (extremely touristy) or Camden... more vintage and grungey.

The key to Usability ~

Helpful worksheet for week number 7: http://www.puregene.co.uk/ID/week7.html

>> Usabillity has a vital importance in web design. It stands to reason that if a Website is difficult to use it will fail to retain visitors. Although this may seem obvious, the majority of websites do not perform to their optimum potential because the designers have failed to focus on the needs of the user. With a Website, on the other hand, the user will experience its usability before deciding whether to buy anything. This elevates usability to a level of importance well above previous products. In order to succeed, a commercial Website needs to attract and retain customers before there is any hope of making a commercial return. In the 'real' world it would be like a shop with a concealed entrance, hidden assistants and goods laid out in a random manner...

http://www.templateworld.com/free_templates.html (ideal for template design and good layouts... minimilist etc)

>> I decided to use this style of template as it had a good sized banner which is where I could have an image relating to my event. Certain aspects will have to be adjusted such as the tabs which direct you to the various pages. Not everyone will be worried about the navigational part, as long you have a Home, and a couple of others. Think about USABILITY. Some of the examples in the sheet above really help with the ideas part of thinking about how to lay your page out etc. Limited colour range, clean graphics and consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency, consistency!!

Flash Time:

>> Although I've done a couple of quick exercise in Flash before, I wouldn't say that I am a confident user, so I'm thinking that these upcoming weeks are going to be a challenge. Although with the way that the induction to DreamWeaver worked I'm hoping that Step-by-Step points will help me develop skills into knowledge.

Week1:

Week2:

Week3:
DreamWeaver Dynamics...

This experience has been totally new to me. Not using this software before is a bit of a draw back but I was keen to learn as this could be the one which I decided to use for the creation of the event website.

>> An another option would be something rather crude, radical and provoking. Such as the grunge style — dirty look with irregular, nasty, sometimes even ugly and crooked visual elements. http://generationchurch.org/

Helpful work sheet for Exercise: http://www.puregene.co.uk/ID/week3.html

>> As a whole I found the software initially confusing but as the lesson progessed I understood the various elements which contributed towards the final output. I think this was going to be one of the easier activities as Dreamweaver gave you a template so you didnt mind if something was going wrong.

>> The elements of the grunge theme could be easily sourced and it was fun to create your own scene to the page. Below is a stage from the exercise. I'd have to adjust the text block size and margining at the top and side, as this at the moment is what is making it look out of sync.

Because we CanCan*
Event So far:

Event Title: Because we CanCan*
CanCan: With women any aged (stamina levels need to be high)
Location: Trafalgar Sq/ Well known landmarks in London (Research more)
Music: Moulin Rouge Soundtrack selection (Something iconic)
Costume: Some individuals obviously behind the event will be dressed in the attire normally associated with CanCan but smart dress for those daring enough to join in.

Music to your ears?

I'd quite like to use this music track to play in the background of the event/website etc. The pinicle of the CanCan... Something individuals can relate to!

3) Sountrack of Moulin Rouge ~ Because We Can-

Mainstream Media Mayhem ~

>> I quickly searched on youtube for the video's relating to The Moulin Rouge film featuring Nicole Kidman. The reasoning for this is to get a brief idea for the music and costume, this could be the base upon the advertisement and website style of theme/layout etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCZs__8EnVE - Even women in the 20th century were trying their hands at this evocative dance... Racey and seductive for their time.

>> I particularly like the way in which the costumes and music can stay traditional but the actual dance can be upbeat and contemporary etc. Although not everyone in the flashmob will be up for dressing the part, staged memebers of a CanCan troup will be there on hand to get in the mood of a traditional french affair of the dance.

>> A link to show how the once traditional dance can be transformed into something modern... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTJv4cPgnVE

Ideas...

>> From some of the research I have carried out I think the Flashmob's which work most are those which involve dancing and rhythmic moves. This made me think that this would be ideal for my event. Although not everyone has a rhythm when dancing. Saying this if I was to set something which wouldn't recquire a lot of dance knowledge I could still acquire the effect that a lot of the flashmob dances entail.

Some examples are below...

>> Celebrities also get involved when it comes to flashmobs, Tyra Banks and Black Eyed Peas to name a few. They make it socialably acceptable to do this sort of thing, and makes people think that it is the 'in' thing.

>> With the T-Mobile adverts, they have literally got it down to a 'T'! The amount of action and energy which is packed into the minutes on screen is amazing! It made me realise that a flashmob is something that can happen imminently as well as people dispursing easily after...

>> "There's something really special when you take an audience and instead of just being passive and watching, you invite them to participate," he says. "That's why it was so magical for both parties. Two groups of people came together to create something that neither of them could have done alone."

>> My intial idea was to do a massive CANCAN dance. I originally thought that just women aged between 18-35 could take part but on second thoughts I like the idea of including anyone... as long as they have stamina.

^^ I really like the idea of creating a Vintage element to the advertising of the event, whenever I think of a CanCan dance I automatically think of a france Moulin Rouge theme... This something i could carry through!

"The can-can (more correctly not hyphenated, as in the original French: cancan; French pronunciation: [kɑ̃kɑ̃]) is regarded today primarily as a physically demanding music hall dance, performed by a chorus line of female dancers who wear costumes with long skirts, petticoats, and black stockings, that hearkens back to the fashions of the 1890s. The main features of the dance are the lifting up and manipulation of the skirts, with high kicking and suggestive, provocative body movements"

TO DO: LOOK IN TO MOULIN ROUGE AND MUSIC FOR WEBSITE/ BLOG

Tuesday

Weebly Week2: Workshop

In this lesson, I learnt how to use a website which generates self driven content on to a website. The website gave you several templates which you could use as a base.
>> I really enjoy these sorts of activities as it enables you to challenge yourself t6o create something which you and most importantly others would find enjoyable to read and appealing to use and look at.
>> Once I got to know the setup of the website I found it easy adjusting the page to how I wanted it to look. Although I was fussy in the way which I chose the layouts as ideally I wanted something to connect with the theme of my flashmob.

>> I tried a minimalist approach to the website, giving it a contemporary feel. Although I was going to stick to a monochrome theme with the imagery but when I tried injecting some colour to the picture on the front page it really brings out the other elements.

*The website itself is still in need of completion but the majority of the pages are done and gives an insight in to the event and myself, as well as a page for those which perhaps aren't familiar with what FLASHMOBS entail.

Word of mouth no more...

So why be
hush hush about the event?

More times than not, the event turns out to be a bigger success when planned last minute than if its been jotted in an organiser for months. Now with a younger generation becoming more lively and free willed, the secret event targeted to them usually
entails a booze infested hideout in the heart of London. Although there are many options to include other generations such as art auctions, pop-up restaurants - a little more subdued but equally as enjoyable.

Examples of a Secret Event...
  • Raves/Parties
  • Silent events (silent disco's etc)
  • Art Auction
  • Mass Social Experiments
  • Pop-Up resturants
  • Meetings for an effect/reaction (dance, pillow fights, underwear day, freeze of action etc)

Giant Cocktail Parties and Pop-Up Restaurants!

It's always nice to have an after work drink to wind down to the weekend, but imagine a mass of people meeting for a specially organised drink up! On the social side of opinions, what an event to meet new people but on the negative front of things, how to handle handle hundreds of 'gone' people... that would be an interesting one for the Police!

As well as the sociable drinking events, culinary events are also a big hit in European countries. 'Open Houses' are used to entice people in for in most instances a 3 Coursed meal! They pay for the luxury of being wined and dined within the constraints of a nice family/ contemporary environment.

First things First...

Promotion of an Event >>

Brief:
http://www.puregene.co.uk/ID/ An understanding of how extreme some individuals go to attracting people for an event big or small.

"
This workshop concentrates essentially on promoting a short event through various social networks and web applications, using a wide range of techniques including flash animation, e-flyer, iphone screen, banners etc."

>> So what kind of events are already a success?

FlashMob: (According to Wiki) A flash mob (or flashmob) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media or viral emails. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_mob

T-Mobile have gone the extra mile to produce show stopping adverts to become massive YouTube sensations... "The T-mobile flashmobs are a great and unique way to engage with its (potential) customers and create a fun experience for a low-interest product. It also generates a lot of word of mouth on various user-generated platforms, such as Twitter and YouTube." http://www.viralblog.com/guerrilla-marketing/trafalgar-square-t-mobile-karaoke-flash-mob/
